“Roomies No More”, Non permanent marker on dry erase board, 2007
Today is the last day Amber, my office roomate, and I share a room. An amazing feat in that we work in the audio arts. If we were say, professional painters, It might have made sense, what with a subject to paint all the time and all. Nonetheless, the company has been succesfull enough to move into our own building, and in doing so, we’ll each have our own room.
That’s great news. Except I feel a sudden sense of loneliness. Who am going to share an impromtu Ze Frank viewing with? How am I going to eves drop on what’s happening next on Grey’s Anatomy, Heroes, and her own personal life which by far out-dramas any TV show. How are we going to continue to shun the “outsiders” of room C, with quotes like, “You’re not cool enough Ben“, “Oh… here comes Ben, let’s stop having fun”, and “No Ben, we will not teach you how to ‘Walk it Out’, that’s a room C thing, you wouldn’t understand”.
We march on, with progress, our chin up, and our Ben heckling skills intact, as we face the unknown. New bonds will be formed, new turf war lines drawn, and fresh blood to be shed (Welcome abord Chris).
My fellow workers, I’d like to dedicate this song to each of you, as we walk into our new home and secluded music stables. Inevitably, we’ll all close our doors, or don our headphones to perfect that music edit we do so well. Just don’t forget to rib thy neighbor now and again.
